Суд мести

And being in transit, he did not even have a visa. So on the face of it he had no business planned here. Nor did he describe to Putin, as the presumptuous Khodorkovskiy had, the thieving going on among the Kremlin's tame oil executives. Nor was it Putin who with a raise of the eyebrow ordered Sechin to throw the Indian into jail. It just happened somehow.

So the task facing Burtovoy was simple. Put the guy inside. The rest we can sort out later. For the purposes of the arrest, there had to be written grounds. We do not know why, but that was entrusted to the FSB. This was apparently part of the distribution of duties in the impending official onslaught. We do know whose signature now entered this unholy situation - that of D.V. Ananyev, a senior lieutenant at the FSB's Economic Security Department.

In a one-page report addressed to Burtovoy, Ananyev wrote that he had some kind of information that linked Pichugin to the Gorins' murder. According to that report, Aleksey had forged some financial papers and was leaning on various companies and individuals. Why? To improve the finances of the Yukos-Moskva oil company. In other words Aleksey, out of corporate zeal, was counterfeiting documents and engaging in blackmail.

Sources unknown said Gorin was aware of this and was blackmailing Pichugin. So Pichugin killed him. They further said that Pichugin might intimidate subordinates and witnesses to conceal the evidence. So Ananyev requested Pichugin's arrest. The original of this report bears the stamp of Deputy Prosecutor-General Biryukov - "approved". Time has passed, and today we can count the cost of this nonsense.

  1. We already know that none of the information on which the report was based was produced in court. It did not exist, other than as a fantasy concocted by Snr Lt Ananyev.
  2. The witnesses whom Pichugin might have intimidated were not presented to the court. As Ananyev wrote his report, the witnesses who would later be forced to testify were in jail. They did not know that the organisers of the Yukos case would turn them into witnesses.
  3. Aleksey Pichugin's subordinates declined to say anything bad about their boss. Whether he was in jail or out, they had only glowing words for him. He was admired in a way that managers rarely are.
  4. We have already seen the items and documents taken away as evidence during the searches. We know their value. They were not even mentioned in court, even though Pichugin was in custody to "preserve" them.

Such is the price of Snr Lt Ananyev's report. This kind of conduct, even in the pursuit of one's career, is unworthy of a man who claims the title of an officer in Russia. Time will set the record straight, and each will get what they deserve. Sooner or later those close to him will wonder what role he played in the prosecution of an innocent man who got 20 years in jail for nothing.

All in all, the initial impression is of the procuracy and security service working together with unprecedented efficiency. For some reason Ananyev, a senior lieutenant in the FSB's Economic Security Department, addressed his report not to his boss in Directorate K or even to the head of his own department, Zaostrovtsev, but directly to investigator Burtovoy. And Burtovoy received it the very same day. Not only that, but also on the very same day he obtained the approval of Deputy Prosecutor-General Biryukov. On the basis of this report Pichugin was arrested late in the evening and sent off to the FSB's remand centre at Lefortovo.
