Суд мести

8 October 2004. The trial adjourns until 12 October at Kostina's request.

12 October 2004. Adjournment until 18 October due to illness of Peshkun's lawyer.

18 October 2004. State prosecutor Svetlana Artemyeva takes no further part in the Pichugin trial. The official reason is "due to work on another case". The unofficial reason is that she has declined to conduct the case after heavy pressure from senior Procuracy General officials. Moscow city prosecutor Boris Loktionov takes over as lead spokesman for the prosecution.

The hearings move on to the episode of the alleged death threats by Pichugin against Sergey Lobikov, deputy general director of the company OOO Kiber-Klab. The court questions Igor Koretskiy, a security guard at the club in whose presence, according to Lobikov, the threats were uttered. Koretskiy denies Lobikov was threatened.

19 October 2004. The parents of Olga Kostina are questioned. They describe the explosion outside their flat in November 1998. The stand is then taken by Valeriy Gorin, father of Sergey Gorin, the businessman whose disappearance Pichugin is accused of organising. None of these people regard the defendants as complicit in the crimes. Kostina's father, Nikolay Chistenkov, says that the family have always believed - and still do - in only one reason behind the explosion: a dispute between Kostina and officials at the Moscow mayoralty. Chistenkov also says he was aware Kostina had numerous disputes with mayoralty officials while working as a freelance adviser to the mayor in 1998.

20 October 2004. The prosecution calls its main witness, Igor Korovnikov - a habitual criminal serving life for a series of murders and rapes in Tambov. As the session opens, Judge Olikhver orders the defence not to ask about Korovnikov's criminal record.

Korovnikov testifies for over four hours. He is three years into his sentence at a prison camp on Ognennyy island. In reply to prosecution questions, he remembers in minute detail events of six to seven years previously. It is clear that he has been given coaching.

But when questioned by the defence, for which he could not be prepared, Korovnikov is unable to recall even significant events from that period.

It emerges in cross-examination that one week ahead of an identification parade, investigators showed Korovnikov photographs of Pichugin and Peshkun - the men he was to point out.

He is asked by the defence where he had learned to make improvised explosive devices of the type used outside the stairwell door of Kostina's parents' flat. He replies that it was at the Tambov Institute of Marxism-Leninism, during training sessions in wartime resistance methods.

21 October 2004. Sergey Lobikov is called. He says that Pichugin made death threats against him, and that he "took the threats as being for real". Lobikov says that Pichugin at the same time broke a door to the Moscow Palace of Youth. But the door shown by Lobikov, supposedly broken by Pichugin, is not the same door that his bodyguard Igor Koretskiy pointed to in hearings on 18 October.
