Суд мести

True to their word, the two officers - we now know them to be Capt. Tambovtsev and Snr.Lt. Ananyev, whom we've already met - returned on the appointed day. Once again they explained that their line of work was economic crime. They wanted to know about the Gorins, and about Aleksey's personal life, job and bosses. A tape recorder stood on the windowsill, so they made no notes.

During their conversation, Capt. Tambovtsev suddenly offered Pichugin a coffee with brandy. Ananyev concurred. Pichugin declined, but they insisted. As if they were all sitting round a table for old times' sake. Ananyev brewed some coffee and brought some glasses, while Tambovtsev produced a bottle which, defence lawyers later said, "resembled a brandy bottle" but Aleksey couldn't see any name on the label. Tambovtsev took three glasses, poured a shot into each, and placed one in front of the arrested man - who left the brandy but took a few sips of coffee.

Five to seven minutes after that, Pichugin's head began to buzz and his legs went numb. In his own words later to an investigator: "It felt as if I was no longer in control of my own actions. Meanwhile, they were still insisting that I drink the brandy. I declined."

Now came a torrent of questions about Yukos chiefs. After that Pichugin's memory goes blank. He believes he passed out.

It was dark outside the window when he came round. He was sitting in the same chair, semi-conscious. Tambovtsev and Ananyev were in the room. A third, unidentified, man was shaking him by the shoulder and shouting: "You took out a hit on Kostina, and your bosses put you up to it." The coffee and brandy had gone from the table.

Gradually, Pichugin regained his senses. The stranger backed away and Ananyev offered some chewing gum. Pichugin reminded the men who had so recently been offering to help him that he was expecting an investigator and a lawyer. "It's already half past eight," was the reply. Five minutes later, a warder arrived. Back in his cell, Pichugin again felt odd and became confused. He asked the warder to call a doctor. A woman paramedic arrived, took his blood pressure, and pronounced him fine.

His cellmates reported that the next morning he had narrow pupils and was acting strangely, as if intoxicated by alcohol or narcotics. He had also slept fully-clothed, which was out of character.

On the morning of 15 July the drugged Pichugin woke up in a state of slow motion. His stomach ached and there was white noise in his head. He noticed needle marks near the radial vein of his left hand and between the first and index fingers. In his jacket pocket he found a pack of Parliament Lite - a brand that he had never smoked. Five cigarettes of his own, which he usually carried with him, were still in the same place, in the jacket. He snapped the filters off the Parliament Lites - they were green inside.

On 16 July an investigating officer called Churkin heard out the entire story, in the presence of a defence lawyer. Because of his stomach problems, Pichugin went onto a diet. Three days later he still felt lethargic, and depression set in.
