Суд мести

I can only have one explanation for such a strange prosecution - he was paying money to have the case put on ice. Then the old governor and his team returned, and Gorin was free to show his face again. To this day we do not know what happened to that prosecution, for a particularly major fraud. And at the time it was the highest-profile case in the history of the Tambov economic crime squad. The amount of money that vanished in Algoritm was colossal by anyone's standards. The question is, just what did Gorin and the regional authorities do to get the slate wiped clean?

Half of Tambov knew all this long before Burtovoy's letter to the Interior Ministry and FSB. Any informer among the small-time crooks would have fed his handler information about the missing 200 million. So why did the FSB men reply that "this scenario is unconfirmed"? They obviously didn't ask around.

The first Demidov lead

The reaction of the local press to the Gorins' disappearance was revealing.

"We had a fairly good working relationship with the authorities, and whenever anything happened in town we'd talk directly to the investigating officers," Taisiya Kirillova says. "As soon as we knew Demidov was the investigator in charge of the case, I contacted him. At the time, the main scenario was armed robbery. Despite what everyone in town thought, of course - that he'd gone into hiding again."

But after the Gorins' case had been thrown into the battery of measures against Yukos, Galina Dedova, Olga Gorina's mother, broke her silence. Her outspoken interviews in the press coincide with Aleksey Pichugin's arrest in June 2003. In one of those interviews she says:

"... On that day the phone rang. I picked it up and said 'hello?', and heard 'Hi Olga!'. I said 'this isn't Olga, she's not at home, who's that?'. The caller said 'this is Aleksey, I'm waiting for Sergey, what's going on?'. I said 'they've been kidnapped'. He said, more or less word for word: 'Oh my God, that's awful,' and expressed his condolences. I said 'was he supposed to see you at work?'. And he answered 'not at work, we just wanted to meet up, we haven't seen each other for ages.' Although Sergey had been saying that they had some item of business to sort out ... He was supposed to take all his papers along with him, as if for an interview, and he was going to get a job. But it also struck me that Aleksey couldn't possibly confuse Olga's voice for mine."

It was on this fragment of reported speech that the prosecution began to build its charges. From what Galina Dedova said it seems that, firstly, just before he disappeared Gorin was intending to meet Pichugin. This was later backed up by Gorin's driver, Peshkun. From Peshkun's testimony it slowly emerged that Gorin was so afraid of something that he carried a knife. This is somewhat naive, as a knife will deter only a random robber.

Secondly, Pichugin, according to Dedova's account, could not have mistaken her voice for Olga's. This was never seriously contested. Nonetheless, the Pichugin phone call would subsequently be viewed by the prosecution as an attempt to concoct an alibi. And before the case became political the robbery motive, indirectly supported by Peshkun's testimony, was viewed by the same investigator Demidov as one of the most plausible.
