Суд мести

4 September 2003. Pichugin sends a statement to the Procuracy General in which he refuses to take part in any investigative measure and orders his lawyers to do likewise. Defence lawyer Georgiy Kaganer explains that the statement was prompted "by the unprecedented number of flagrant breaches of the law, committed both during the investigation and during court hearings".

18 September 2003. Pichugin's lawyers announce that testimony from a serial murderer, Igor Korovnikov, has appeared in the case. Korovnikov claims knowledge of Pichugin's complicity in the crimes of which he is charged. 20 November 2003. Pichugin's lawyers lodge an application at the European Court of Human Rights. It cites "failure by the Procuracy General to hold an immediate medical examination" of the defendant, and also "repeated refusals to provide medical first aid for Pichugin".

On the same day the Moscow City Court rejects a defence challenge to the Basmannyy Court ruling that the refusal to provide immediate medical attention after the use of a mind-altering substance was lawful. The hearing continues for over two hours, but the judges need just 40 seconds to reach their decision.
